The Rhondda starts at Porth, ten minutes from our Pontypridd yard, and runs up two valleys — Rhondda Fawr through Tonypandy and Treorchy to Treherbert, and Rhondda Fach through Ferndale to Maerdy. Rhondda terraces are solid stone, not cavity. They need lime plaster internally and lime or breathable pointing externally. Modern gypsum skim and cement-rich repointing trap moisture, blow the plaster and decay the stone behind it. We spec breathable build-ups on every solid-wall job in the valleys.
Steep Stepped Plots
Most Rhondda properties sit on terraced plots cut into the valley side, with rear gardens stepping sharply up or down. Patios, retaining walls and extensions here need engineered retaining and drainage — not stacked blockwork. Get it wrong and you get bulging walls and water pushed at the property.
Hard Valley Weather
The upper Rhondda takes more rain, more wind and more freeze-thaw than the coastal belt. Mortar mixes, render systems and pointing have to be specified for that actual exposure rating, which is why generic spec fails so quickly up-valley.
No Room To Extend Outwards
Terraced footprints on narrow Rhondda plots often leave little scope for a large rear extension. Loft and attic conversions are frequently the better route to usable space here, and we build them properly — structure, insulation, stairs, building control sign-off.
Chimneys And Stacks
Tall stone stacks on exposed terraced ranks take the worst of the weather. Perished mortar, spalled stone and slipped flashings are routine work in the Rhondda — usually a rebuild is safer and cheaper long-term than another patch.
