Service Overview
Plastering —
The Brief, In Plain English.
What It Is
Plastering is the smooth wall and ceiling finish that everything else (paint, tile, wallpaper) sits on. Skim over plasterboard, backing plaster onto brick or block, full replastering of older properties, lime plaster on solid-wall period stock — polished to a paint-ready finish.
Who It's For
Homeowners after a flawless paint-ready finish; renovators reskimming tired walls; landlords needing fast, durable plaster turnarounds; anyone tired of bumps, cracks and patches showing through every coat of paint.
When You Need It
Plaster goes on once first-fix electrics and plumbing are complete and walls are dry. New plasterboard takes a skim straight away; older walls need a primer or backing coat depending on substrate.
Why It Matters
Bad plaster shows up in raking light forever. The cost difference between a cheap skim and a properly-finished surface is small. The cost difference 10 years later — when you're still patching it — is huge.
What Happens If You Wait
The Cost Of
Doing Nothing.
Plaster is the most-seen surface in your house. When it's wrong, you see it every time the sun comes through the window.
Risks Of Ignoring It
- →Skim onto damp or dusty walls — blown plaster within months, full strip and reskim.
- →Skim onto modern gypsum on solid stone — moisture trapped, plaster blows.
- →Wrong mesh or bead at corners — cracking, edge damage, expensive repairs.
- →No movement detailing at junctions — straight-line cracks across the ceiling.
- →Skimming over wallpaper paste residue — adhesion fails, plaster comes off in sheets.
Common Mistakes Customers Make
- ×Letting a handyman 'have a go' at plastering.
- ×Skimping on the prep before the first trowel touches the wall.
- ×Skimming over old wallpaper or unsealed surfaces.
- ×Painting before the plaster has fully dried out.

Full Service Area MapSkim Over Plasterboard
Two-coat polished skim over new plasterboard — extensions, partitions, drylined walls, ceilings. Paint-ready finish for the decorator.
Re-Skim Of Tired Walls
Over existing sound plaster after preparation — a faster, cheaper option than full replastering when the underlying surface is solid.
Full Replastering
Hack-off and complete replaster of failing surfaces — backing coat onto brick or block, then two-coat skim. The right route when the existing plaster has blown or wallpaper has stripped it.
Lime Plaster For Period Stock
Lime plaster over solid stone or brick walls in Victorian and Edwardian terraces — breathable, sympathetic to old building materials, the only correct spec for these walls.
Repair & Patching
Cracks, holes, blown patches and repair of damaged plaster after structural alterations or first fix. Feathered into surrounding plaster so the repair doesn't ghost through paint.

Ask Yours
How much does plastering cost in South Wales?
+
Cost depends on m² of wall, ceiling vs wall, skim vs full replaster, and prep needed. We quote per room or per m² in writing after a site visit.
How long does plastering take to dry?
+
Fresh skim takes 2–7 days to dry to a uniform colour depending on temperature, ventilation and humidity. Don't paint until the plaster is one consistent shade — usually a pale buff.
Can you skim over Artex?
+
Yes — either skim over with a bonding primer, or for textured Artex we recommend a backing coat first. Asbestos-suspect Artex needs testing before we touch it.
Do you do lime plaster?
+
Yes — lime plaster is essential on solid-wall period properties to maintain breathability and avoid trapping damp. Different rhythm and skill than modern gypsum but bread-and-butter work for us.
Will plaster cracking come back?
+
Cracks from poor prep or wrong mix will come back. Cracks from building movement need addressing at source — we'll diagnose the cause before quoting cosmetic repair.
Do you cover ceilings as well as walls?
+
Yes — ceiling skim is a normal part of any room replaster. Bigger ceilings or vaulted spaces are quoted by area as standard.
Can you plaster around first-fix electrics and plumbing?
+
Yes — coordinated with your electrician and plumber, or with our team if we're running the whole job. First fix has to be complete before we start.
Do you tidy up after?
+
Yes — floors covered during work, dust contained as far as possible, all debris bagged and removed at the end. The site stays liveable around the work.
